Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan 2025
This work began with walking. I approach Tokyo as an outsider. I do not share the language, history, or cultural inheritance of the city, and that distance shapes how I move within it. Walking becomes a way of learning without claiming familiarity, of remaining present without presuming. It slows the encounter and makes space for curiosity.
The use of a large-format camera reinforces this pace. The tripod, set at eye level, acts as a quiet surrogate for my presence. While the photograph may appear unoccupied, the act of looking is structured by the body that stood there, waited, and chose when to release the shutter.
This work does not attempt to explain Tokyo. It records movement through specific neighborhoods and the time spent within them.
